Broadway actor Tim Pigott-Smith dies aged 70

Tim Pigott-Smith has died at the age of 70 his agent has announced. He is best known for starring in the hit TV series The Jewel in the Crown, which launched him to international fame. he also played several roles on Broadway and in London’s West End.

Pigott-Smith was Tony and Olivier Award nominated for his role of Charles III which he originated in London and reprised in New York. The actor was currently working on a film version of the production when he died suddenly. He was also set to star in a new version of Authur Miller’s Death of a Salesmen which was due to open on Monday.

His agent released a statement which read, ‘it is with deep regret that I have to announce the sad news that Tim Pigott-Smith died this morning. Tim was one of the great actors of his generation. Much-loved and admired by his peers, he will be remembered by many as a gentleman and a true friend.’

While Pigott was primarily a stage actor he also had several roles in Hollywood films such as The Remains of the Day, Gangs of New York and V for Vendetta. He first became known for his roles in Shakespeare and starred alongside Dame Judi Dench, Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Patrick Stewart.
