Andrew Garfield slammed for gay comments

AnSpiderman actor Andrew Garfield has sparked outrage after he claimed that he feels like he is a gay man but ‘without the physical act.’ People have also been irked by his comment that he prepared for playing a gay man by watching RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Garfield is currently starring in the play Angles in America in London and was giving an interview to Gay Times magazine when he made the comments. He said ‘My only time off during rehearsals – every Sunday I would have eight friends over and we would just watch Ru.’

However many people found the comments offensive to gay people and took to Twitter and social media to air their anger. One user said ‘#AndrewGarfield –that’s not how it works. Ignorant. Gay erasure. Bad enough ur str8 playing gay 4 pay. Now appropriating experience? #FU.’ Another added ‘Andrew Garfield says he’s gay because he watches RuPaul’s Drag Race. You know, like that kid who thinks he’s Asian because he watches Naruto.’

Not all the responses were critical. One fan said that Garfield was an ally to the gay community and he just made a small mistake. Others suggested that Garfield is, in fact, gay and made the remarks to see how people would react to his supposed new sexuality.

Garfield called his experience of starring in the play ‘the most fulfilling creative experience I’ll ever hope to have.’ He plays a character struggling with a diagnosis of AIDS in the 1980s who is dumped by his boyfriend who is struggling to come to terms with his partner’s condition.
