Ryan Seacrest to return as host of American Idol

It’s official, Ryan Seacrest will return at the host of American Idol. The TV presenter’s reappointment was announced this morning while hosting his show Live with Kelly & Ryan. Ryan’s co-host Kelly Ripa confirmed the news saying ‘I am happy to confirm…that Ryan Seacrest is returning as the host of American Idol.’ He responded by saying he was ‘very, very excited.’

Seacrest has hosted the show since its inception back in 2002 up until 2016 but it was unclear if he would be back for the next season after taking up presenting duties on morning television. The series was initially axed after the low ratings it received in 2016 but the series has once again been picked up and it is thought it will air again next year – 2 years after it was last seen.

Speaking about his return to the series which launched Seacrest from a relatively unknown presenter to international stardom he said it feels like the show is his home. ‘I’m so grateful for the show and all the career and life opportunities it’s allowed me to experience. It’s been an incredible journey from day one. To be asked to return this year, at my new home at Disney|ABC, is an honor, if not a bit surreal.’

The new series is set to feature Katy Perry as a judge, with auditions commencing in the next few weeks. There had been deep speculation that Seacrest would not return to the show because he was requesting an executive producer role – something which had previously been denied to Perry when signing up.
