MTV VMAs get political

Last night’s VMA have had a mixed response from fans with some calling the awards dull while other praised the ceremony for its reflective and somber tone. Many of the artists who were performing and accepting awards took the opportunity to speak out against Donald Trump and the surge of white supremacy while other used their time in the spotlight to highlight the rise in suicides. Transgender members of the military were also in attendance – days after the President banned them from serving in the forces.

Kendrick Lemar was the big winner of the night picking up a total of six awards.  Artist of the year went to the ever popular Ed Sheeran and Fifth Harmony won the trophy for best pop video. Tayor Swift chose not to attend last night’s ceremony but she did win the gong for best collaboration with Zayn for their track I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.

However, it was politics that dominated the evening. There was an emotional appearance by Susan Bro, the mother of the girl killed in the protests in Charlottesville. Speaking about the death of her daughter she said “I miss her, but I know she’s here tonight”. Paris Jackson, the daughter of singer Michael Jackson, also spoke out against ”Nazi white supremacist jerks.”
