Coronation Street’s Liz Dawn dies aged 77

The Coronation Street actress Liz Dawn has died at the age of 77 after losing her battle with the lung disease emphysema. Dawn played the soap legend Duckworth for over thirty years and was loved by millions across the world for her working-class portrayal of the feisty blonde.

Her family said that they were devastated adding ‘She has been the love, light and inspiration in our lives and we are bereft at her passing.’ A statement which was released on behalf of her family said ‘We have been blessed to have Liz in our lives, as she was such a kind, considerate and caring friend and colleague.’

Vera Duckworth was one of televion’s most loved characters alongside her on-screen husband Jack played by the actor Bill Tarmey. She retired from the show in 2008 after being diagnosed with the lung disease emphysema for years earlier. Over 12 million people watched her on-screen death with millions more mourning the passing of the actress yesterday.

Stars from the show have paid tribute to the true acting royalty. Julie Goodyear who played Bett Lynch in the show said of her friend’s passing ‘Such sad news regarding the passing of Liz Dawn. I send my sincere condolences to her family. RIP Liz. ‘

Actress Jenny McAlpine made a statement reading ‘If ever there was an actress that I wanted to be like most, it would be Liz Dawn. Every time we met she asked after everyone. She was genuinely interested in how everyone was doing. I’ll miss her asking how I am. She was loved by us all.’
