Meryl Streep and Karl Lagerfeld are locked in a bitter feud over rumours that Meryl refused to wear Lagerfeld’s dress to the Oscars because she wouldn’t be paid to do so.
Streep’s stylist has rebuffed any such accusation with a statement saying that no monetary offers were every made or considered. ‘At no point were there any conversations regarding monetary compensation. Any reports or quotes stating otherwise are a complete fabrication.’
She went on to say that Streep was considering a number of dresses and decided to plump for another designer. ‘In the case of Chanel’s submission, which was presented with full knowledge that Ms. Streep and I – her stylist – were having conversations with various brands, we were shown sketches of a dress from their most recent couture collection. We decided to go in a different direction, with another designer.’
According to Lagerfeld, after Streep’s team placed an order for the dress they received a call a few days later stating that ‘Don’t continue with the dress, we found somebody who will pay us.’ The fashion house has said that it never pays stars to wear their gowns. However, if they make a couture piece for an A-lister, the dress can be worth up to $100,000. Not bad for a nights work on the red carpet!
