It might be the Oscar’s tonight but the Academy Awards aren’t the only gongs been given out this weekend. Last night the annual Independent Spirit awards took place in Santa Monica – and all the stalwarts of this year’s season were nominated and hoping to win.
Stars who attended the ceremony, which is said to recognise the best in independent film-making, included Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Chastain and Anette Benning. Though she was nominated for best actress, Natalia Portman did not attend due to her pregnancy.
Big winners on the night included Moonlight for best feature film, Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea and Isabelle Huppert for her role in Elle. The best director gong went to Barry Jenkins for his work on Moonlight and the best documentary award went to the highly coveted OJ Simpson film Made in America.
Moonlight has been gaining traction in recent weeks with many speculating that it could steal several of the major awards from front-runners La La Land and Manchester by the Sea. All will be revealed at the big event which happens tonight in California.
