Rockstar Gregg Allman has died at the age of 69. A post on his official website announced that the singer and musician passed away at his home in Savannah, Georiga on Saturday. Allman rose to fame in the 1960s with his band Duane, which he formed with his brother. Some of the band’s biggest hits include Whipping Post, It’s Not My Cross to Bear and Midnight Rider. The band recently cancelled all their remaining tour dates for the year.
Allman was married five times – the most high-profile of which was the singer Cher who earlier tweeted that ‘words are impossible.’ His struggles with alcohol and drugs have been well documented. Allman was diagnosed with Hepatitis C and underwent a liver transplant in 2010. The statement on his website eluded to the rockstar’s turbulent medical history. ‘Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul.’
His manager and longtime friend Michael Lehman said in a statement ‘I have lost a dear friend and the world has lost a brilliant pioneer in music. He was a kind and gentle soul with the best laugh I ever heard. His love for his family and bandmates was passionate as was the love he had for his extraordinary fans. Gregg was an incredible partner and an even better friend. We will all miss him.’
