Daniel Day Lewis to retire from acting

The actor Daniel Day-Lewis has announced that he is set to retire from the profession. A statement delivered by the actor’s agent simply said that he ‘will no longer be working as an actor’. They added that the decision was a private one and that Daniel was ‘immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences.’

He is known for starring in films such as Lincoln, There Will Be Blood and My Left Foot. He won the best actor Oscar for his roles in each of these films and is the only man to ever win the gong three times. He has often taken long breaks from acting and stay away from it for several years in the 1990s – he was lured back to the screen by Martin Scorcaisse with a role in Gangs of New York.

Lewis will have one last outing on screen. He has filmed, what we know to be his last role, in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. The film is set in the 1950s fashion industry and will be released earlier this year.

As well as winning three Oscars the actor also has four BAFATs for best actor, two Golden Globes as well as a Knighthood for his services to the drama industry.
