The musician Tom Petty has died at the age of 66 after suffering from a heart attack. Petty was discovered unconscious at his home in Malibu on Monday and was in a full state of cardiac arrest. He was rushed to hospital but there wasn’t anything doctors could do to save the singer. He was known for performing hits such as Learning to Fly and American Girl with his band Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.
His manager said that he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. ‘He died peacefully at 20:40 Pacific time (03:40 GMT Tuesday) surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.’ There was confusion sparked by the singer’s death, with the hospital retracting their statement that he has passed away. It has been suggested that they did so after the news was leaked before members of his family had been informed.
Stars from around the world have paid tribute to Petty. Bob Dylan said ‘It’s shocking, crushing news.’ Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys said ‘I’m heartbroken to hear about Tom Petty. Tom was a hell of a songwriter and record-maker. He will be missed by everyone who loves music. L&M.’ Beatles star Paul McCartney tweeted that he was sending his love to Petty’s friends and family.
Kiefer Sutherland also paid tribute to the musician, referring to him as a giant of the music world. ‘Today America lost one of its musical giants. Thank you Tom Petty for all the music. To me you will live forever.’
