La La Land cleans up at Oscars

It was a night filled with glamour, tears, political speeches and drama. In the end, the night went to La La Land which scooped the awards for best actress, best director and best song (among others) – though controversially it missed out on best picture.

Emma Stone gave an impassioned speech for her best actress award and Damien Chazelle was the youngest person ever to win the award for best director. Casey Affleck won the award for best actor for his role in Manchester by the Sea. He was congratulated by big brother Ben when his name was announced – himself also a multiple Oscar winner.

After the outrage at the lack of black talent being recognised in previous years, Viola Davies and Mahershala Ali won in the best supporting actress and actor categories for Fences and Moonlight respectively.

Many people gave impassioned political speeches against the current Trump administration with host Kimmy Kimmel even tweeting the President during the show.

It could have been a special night for Lin-Manuel Miranda who has already won  Tony, Emmy and Grammy and was nominated for an Oscar for best song but in the end, he lost out to La La Land for City of Stars.
