TV presenter Richard Hammond has spoken about his horror smash for the first time. The Top Gear and Grand Tour host revealed that he thought that he was going to die when the $2million car he was driving spiralled off the road at 120mph. Hammond said that he thought ‘Oh God, I’m going to die.’ He described the moment when he went over the edge and thought ‘I’ve had it.’ By some miracle, Hammond managed to escape with little for than a fractured knee and some moderate bruising.
Recalling the moment he lost control of the vehicle, Richard said that he knew it was bad because he was travelling on an elected road. ‘I was aware that I was up high, and that inevitably the car was going to come down. And yeah of course there was a moment of dread – “Oh God, I’m going to die”.
He went on to describe the feeling of rolling down the hill as like being in a tumble dryer full of bricks. ‘I was aware that the car was taking just such a beating. I mean if you look at those craters, that’s a big hole that’s just impact and it looks like the thing has been dropped from space to leave a whole that big.’
