After gracing our screen for six years, Girls finally came to an end this weekend. The last episode saw lead character Hannah give birth to a baby boy after getting pregnant during a one night stand. The episode, which was called Latching, saw Hannah and Marnie make-up and promise to raise the child together. Hannah also named her baby boy Grover. We also witnessed Hannah struggling to breastfeed and finding it difficult to adjust to the perils of motherhood – especially being a single parent, albeit with the help of her friends.
The final episode was criticised for being more of an epilogue to the penultimate airing, with many saying that it left them feeling at a loss as to what happened to the many of the other primary characters in the series.
The series, which followed the life of a group of young women in Manhattan, has been on our screen for six years and made an international star of its author and lead actress Lena Dunham. It also launched the career of former marine Adam Driver who played Hannah’s boyfriend in the show. Many have likened it to a modern day Sex and the City, though some have criticised its depictions of American women being white, middle-class city dwellers.
