George and Amal donate $1 million to fight hate groups

They might be busy with their newborn twins but it seems that George and Amal Clooney still have the time to help others too. They announced that they will be donating a staggering $1 million through their foundation to help fight hate groups and oppression across the United states.

The couple will be working closely with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in a bid to combat hate groups and the tyranny they inflict upon the world. The centre was founded in 1971 in a bid to secure civil rights for all citizens. Though the couple has not confirmed the motivation behind their donation, it is thought that the recent events in Charlottesville may have sparked their interest in the cause.

A spokesperson for the SPLC said ‘Like George and Amal Clooney, we were shocked by the size, ugliness, and ferocity of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville.’ Adding ‘We are deeply grateful to the Clooney Foundation for standing with us at this critical moment in our country’s fight against hate.’

Amal, a human rights lawyer, and George have donated large sums of money to several causes across the world. Their foundation seeks to assist refugees with education and has raised millions to help those affected by the civil war in Syria.
